In my previous posts, I shared the deeply personal story of how I found my way to the yoga mat amidst the challenging role of being my husband’s caregiver during his battle with cancer. The aftermath of such an experience is far from easy; it’s like expecting life to revert to ‘normal’ after the storm has passed. Today, I want to explore a transformative approach that has been pivotal in my healing journey – Trauma-Informed Yoga.

Discovering Healing Beyond the Physical Struggles

While my husband’s cancer journey was riddled with doctor’s visits, chemotherapy, radiation, and sleepless nights, what followed was just as complex – the struggle to reintegrate into ‘normal’ life. The emotional and psychological weight of trauma lingered, making me realize that healing couldn’t be confined to only one aspect of myself. I had to find a holistic approach that addressed the emotional as well as the physical.

In my pursuit of healing, I stumbled upon Trauma-Informed Yoga – a practice that resonated deeply with my need for compassion and understanding. Unlike traditional yoga, this approach acknowledges that trauma takes root in both body and mind, and its effects are far-reaching, even after the immediate crisis subsides.

The Holistic Approach to Healing

Trauma-Informed Yoga offers a refreshing perspective. Instead of fixating solely on mastering physical postures, it encourages participants to engage with their bodies on a more profound level. Mindfulness, sensory awareness, and techniques tailored for trauma survivors form the core of this practice, creating a space where survivors can confront their emotions with gentleness and support. This is a practice that involves multiple techniques based on strong pillars that address the entire individual:

Empowerment through Choice

This practice values agency. It empowers participants to modify poses or opt out entirely, granting a sense of control and empowerment over their practice.

Sensory Nurturing

Instructors craft a haven by tending to the sensory experience. Dim lighting, soothing melodies, and gentle touch, when welcomed, work harmoniously to foster a space of safety and healing.

The Power of Present Moment

Trauma-Informed Yoga hinges on mindfulness. By guiding participants to be fully present, the practice helps us find grounding and stability within ourselves.

Words of Healing

Language is pivotal in this approach. Instructors use trauma-sensitive language that avoids triggering phrases, focusing instead on creating a space of safety, choice, and empowerment.

My Journey Comes Full Circle

As a survivor who sought refuge in Trauma-Informed Yoga, I know its profound impact firsthand. It gave me back a sense of agency when I felt powerless, restored my shattered sense of self, and provided a sanctuary when safety was scarce. Today, as an instructor, my mission is to extend this healing to others. I strive to create a nurturing environment where every participant is seen, valued, and empowered through trauma-informed techniques.
