Eight years ago, I stood beside my best friend and said, “I do.” In that moment, I had no idea just how profoundly those vows — “for better or worse, in sickness and in health” — would come to shape the course of our lives.

In the years since, our marriage has weathered more than we could have imagined:

  • A cancer diagnosis that shook us to our core.
  • A pandemic that brought everything to a standstill.
  • The loss of a job that had been a home to Pat for over 15 years.
  • The leap of faith that became The Teal Yogi.

These eight years have been filled with beautiful moments — moments of joy, love, and growth — but they’ve also brought challenges I never could have predicted. And yet, I wouldn’t change a single moment of it.

Because every challenge didn’t break us. It bonded us. It taught us what resilience, healing, and hope truly mean.

Lesson 1: Healing Isn’t Linear

One of the greatest lessons we’ve learned, both personally and professionally, is that healing doesn’t follow a straight path.

There were times when we thought we’d reached the other side — only to find ourselves knocked back down again. There were moments of doubt, fear, exhaustion, and yes, even hopelessness. Times when we questioned if we were strong enough to keep going.

But each time, we found our way back — not because things were easy, but because we chose each other. Over and over again.

Healing — whether it’s from illness, loss, or trauma — looks like this:

  • Taking a step forward, only to stumble back.
  • Finding your footing again, one small step at a time.

It isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s a testament to resilience. It’s wisdom born of every setback, every tear, and every triumph.

Lesson 2: Community Matters

During Pat’s battle with cancer, it became clear just how important community is. We needed people who could lift us up when we felt too weak to stand on our own.

That’s why we built The Teal Yogi the way we did:

  • A studio that feels like a second home, where you can truly be yourself.
  • A space where masks aren’t necessary, and vulnerability is welcomed.
  • A community that celebrates every small win, because sometimes, those wins are the biggest victories.

You don’t have to heal alone. And you’re not meant to. Community isn’t just a nice-to-have — it’s essential to the journey.

Lesson 3: The Hard Seasons Make the Good Ones Sweeter

I’ll be the first to admit: it’s tempting to wish away the hard seasons. To hope for easier days, fewer struggles, and gentler lessons.

I’ve wished for that more times than I can count. And I’m still hoping that Year 9 might bring a little more ease and a little less grit. 😅

But here’s the truth: The hard seasons — the ones that stretched us beyond what we thought we could handle — are the ones that taught me the most about love, resilience, and life itself.

The struggles we faced revealed how strong and kind love can be. They taught us to appreciate the beauty in the little things:

  • Every sunset feels brighter.
  • Every milestone feels richer.
  • Every deep breath feels like a victory.

And none of that would feel as sweet without the hard seasons that came before it.

If You’re in a Hard Season Right Now…

I see you. I honor you. I believe in you.

The work you’re doing, even if it feels small or unseen, is holy. You are healing, even on the days when it feels impossible. Just waking up and trying again — even if it’s messy, even if it’s imperfect — is a victory.

It doesn’t have to look graceful. It doesn’t have to be flawless. Just keep going.

With Love and Compassion,

Mandy
