When I brought Bella home from a dirty garage in North Carolina 18 years ago, I had no idea the profound impact this tiny, feisty kitten would have on my life. She became more than just a pet—she was a teacher. Her wisdom, patience, and unwavering presence reminded me that healing can emerge in the gentlest, most unexpected ways.

As I reflect on our time together, I realize that Bella’s lessons extend beyond her life; they mirror the journey many of us take in healing. Whether you’re navigating trauma, stress, or the demands of everyday life, there’s something to learn from this yoga cat’s quiet wisdom.

Lesson 1: Healing Is Not One-Size-Fits-All

When I first adopted Bella, I was in the midst of leaving an abusive relationship, trying various traditional healing methods—therapy, self-help books, medications. While they all had their place, none truly helped me feel whole again. Bella showed me a different path.

She didn’t need fancy toys or routines to find her peace; she simply found the softest patch of sunlight and settled in. Her contentment reminded me that healing isn’t a straight line.

This is where trauma-sensitive yoga (TSY) comes in. Like Bella’s way of finding the sunlight, TSY offers a gentle, adaptable approach that invites healing. For those frustrated by traditional methods, TSY provides a way to heal at your own pace and in your own way—helping you reclaim your sense of agency.

Lesson 2: Make Time for What (and Who) Matters

During Pat’s battle with lymphoma, Bella was my constant companion. I often felt overwhelmed, with no room for myself. Yet, Bella always reminded me to slow down.

She would nuzzle up during moments of stress, as if to say, “Don’t forget to rest.” I learned that those moments weren’t selfish—they were essential for survival.

If you’re grappling with family struggles or overwhelming stress, remember: taking time for yourself—whether through gentle yoga or mindful breathing—allows you to show up better for those you love. You can’t pour from an empty cup; a few minutes of self-care can transform your day.

Lesson 3: Self-Care Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated

Bella taught me the power of simplicity. She didn’t need extravagant toys; a soft blanket or a warm lap was enough for her contentment. This was her form of self-care—simple yet profound.

As someone often pressed for time, I realized that self-care doesn’t have to be grand. It can be as simple as a 10-minute restorative yoga session or a moment of deep breathing. Many clients struggle to find time for self-care, but even small, mindful moments can recharge and reset you.

Lesson 4: Reconnect with Your Body—It’s Where Healing Begins

Trauma often leaves us feeling disconnected from our bodies. For years, I felt numb and detached. Bella’s presence brought me back to my senses—her soft purring reminded me that it was safe to feel again.

Trauma-sensitive yoga helps with this reconnection, creating a safe space to gently re-engage with your body, one breath at a time. Bella reminded me of the importance of presence, and TSY offers that same invitation to feel safe in your own skin.

Lesson 5: Slow Down and Savor the Moments

Bella was the queen of lounging, finding joy in the simplest moments. I, on the other hand, was always rushing, neglecting my need for rest. It wasn’t until I was on the brink of burnout that I recognized the value of slowing down.

If you’re feeling emotionally exhausted, give yourself permission to slow down. A restorative yoga class, a few minutes in child’s pose, or simply lying down can make all the difference. Healing happens when we allow ourselves to rest.

Lesson 6: It’s Okay to Feel Anxious—You Have Tools to Help

Towards the end of her life, Bella’s illness triggered waves of anxiety I hadn’t expected. In those moments, I leaned on the tools I learned through yoga.

Rather than letting anxiety take over, I practiced grounding myself. I focused on my breath, allowing myself to feel without being consumed by it.

For anyone struggling with anxiety, know you’re not alone. You don’t have to face it without support. Trauma-sensitive yoga and meditation provide tools to help you manage anxiety, finding balance amidst chaos.

In Loving Memory of Bella

Bella may no longer be here physically, but her lessons endure. She taught me how to heal, rest, and live fully. Now, I’m sharing those lessons with you, hoping they guide you on your healing journey.

If you’re curious about how trauma-sensitive yoga can support your path to healing, I’d love to help. Reach out anytime—I’m here to support you as we continue to learn and heal, just like Bella showed me.

With Love and Compassion,

Mandy
