Life is full of decisions—some easy, some gut-wrenchingly hard. This past week, I faced two incredibly difficult choices, ones I wished I could avoid. And even though I knew what was happening in my body—how stress was taking over—I still felt the emotional and physical toll. My heart raced, my mind spun, and sleep felt impossible.

The difference this time? I had the tools to pull myself back before I spiraled too far. Trauma-sensitive yoga (TSY) became my anchor, helping me navigate the storm of emotions that come with making tough decisions.

The Body’s Natural Stress Response (And How It Can Go Off Track)

Our nervous system is designed to help us manage stress, constantly shifting between two states:

  • Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS): This is your “fight or flight” mode, the one that kicks in when you’re faced with danger or stress. Your heart beats faster, your breath quickens, and your body prepares to react.
  • Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS): This is your “rest and digest” mode, where the body calms down, heart rate slows, and relaxation takes over.

Ideally, we flow between these states naturally. But when stress lingers—when decisions feel too big, emotions too overwhelming—the SNS can take over, making it hard to come back down. Suddenly, you’re stuck in a loop of anxiety, insomnia, and tension, even when the danger isn’t real.

My Own Experience with Dysregulation

I could feel it happening. My body was reacting even though I understood the science behind it. I noticed the signs—shallow breathing, tight shoulders, racing thoughts—but knowing didn’t stop it from happening. That’s the tricky thing about stress and trauma responses. Awareness is helpful, but it’s not always enough to pull you out of it.

That’s where trauma-sensitive yoga made all the difference.

How Trauma-Sensitive Yoga Helps Restore Balance

Unlike traditional yoga, TSY isn’t just about stretching and strengthening. It’s about creating safety in the body, making choices that feel right, and using movement and breath to guide yourself back to balance. Here’s why it works:

  • It gives you control. When stress makes you feel powerless, TSY reminds you that you have choices. You decide how to move, how deep to breathe, when to pause.
  • It reconnects you to your body. Stress can make you feel disconnected, like you’re just floating in a sea of emotions. TSY brings you back, helping you notice what’s happening inside without judgment.
  • It helps shift the nervous system. Gentle movement and breathwork activate the parasympathetic nervous system, pulling you out of fight-or-flight and into a calmer state.

Science Backs It Up

Yoga—especially trauma-sensitive approaches—has been studied for its effects on stress and emotional regulation. Research shows that it can:

  • Reduce stress hormones by lowering cortisol levels and calming the nervous system.
  • Improve emotional regulation by strengthening the connection between body and mind.
  • Ease symptoms of anxiety and depression through mindful movement and breathing techniques.

Simple TSY Practices to Try When You’re Overwhelmed

If you’re facing a tough decision or feeling overwhelmed, here are some simple TSY-inspired techniques to help regulate your nervous system:

  • Grounding poses like Child’s Pose or Mountain Pose can help you feel more stable and present.
  • Mindful breathing techniques, like inhaling deeply through your nose and exhaling slowly through your mouth, can signal your body to relax.
  • Body scanning brings awareness to different parts of your body, helping you release tension where you might not even realize you’re holding it.
  • Somatic movement (small, intentional movements) can help shift stuck energy and reset your nervous system.
  • Vagus nerve stimulation, like humming or gentle self-massage, can encourage a shift from stress to relaxation.

The Journey Continues

Life’s hard decisions won’t stop coming. But we don’t have to be at their mercy. TSY isn’t about avoiding stress—it’s about learning how to move through it with more ease, more grace, and a little more kindness toward ourselves.

In the end, my decisions didn’t get any easier. But my ability to handle them did. And that’s the real gift of this practice—not eliminating life’s challenges, but giving us the tools to face them without losing ourselves in the process.

So if you’re standing at your own crossroads, feeling the weight of a decision you don’t want to make, know that you have options. Your breath, your body, your ability to find calm even in the chaos—it’s all within reach. And that’s something worth leaning into.

With Love and Compassion,

Mandy
