Hello, everyone! It’s Mandy here, and today I want to talk about something that is very close to my heart: trauma-sensitive yoga. Yep, we are talking about TSY again today and I’m not going to stop talking about it, and here’s why.

If you’ve been following my journey, you know that my mission is to help those who have suffered from trauma regain their sense of agency and control through trauma-sensitive yoga and meditation techniques. But why am I so passionate about this? Why won’t I stop talking about trauma and yoga? Let’s dive in.

Understanding Trauma-Sensitive Yoga

Trauma-sensitive yoga is a specialized approach to yoga that takes into account the unique needs of individuals who have experienced trauma. Unlike traditional yoga, which often focuses on achieving specific poses with a focus on alignment and physical fitness, trauma-sensitive yoga is about creating a safe and supportive environment where individuals can reconnect with their bodies and emotions at their own pace.

The essence of trauma-sensitive yoga lies in its gentle and inclusive nature. It avoids any form of physical or verbal coercion, emphasizes choice, and encourages participants to listen to their bodies. The goal is not to push oneself but to foster self-awareness and self-compassion.

 How Trauma-Sensitive Yoga Helps

Reconnecting with the Body

Trauma often causes individuals to disconnect from their bodies as a coping mechanism, leading to a sense of disassociation or numbness. Trauma-sensitive yoga helps in gently rebuilding that connection through mindful movements and awareness. By focusing on how each part of the body feels during yoga poses, individuals can start to reclaim their bodily sensations and experiences. This reconnection fosters a sense of safety and presence, allowing individuals to inhabit their bodies fully and with greater ease.

Emotional Regulation

Emotions can be overwhelming, especially for those who have experienced trauma. Trauma-sensitive yoga incorporates mindful movement and breathwork to help regulate emotions. Techniques such as deep breathing, gentle stretching, and guided relaxation provide tools to manage anxiety, stress, and other intense feelings. Over time, these practices can reduce the intensity of emotional responses and help individuals develop a more balanced and calm state of mind, making it easier to navigate daily challenges.

Empowerment

One of the core principles of trauma-sensitive yoga is to empower individuals by giving them control over their practice. This means encouraging participants to make choices that feel right for their bodies, whether it’s modifying a pose, taking a break, or opting out of an exercise. This sense of autonomy within the yoga practice can translate into other areas of life, fostering a greater sense of agency and self-efficacy. When individuals feel empowered to make choices in their yoga practice, they are more likely to feel empowered to make positive changes in their lives.

Creating a Safe Space

The non-judgmental and inclusive environment of trauma-sensitive yoga is crucial for healing. In these classes, the emphasis is on personal experience rather than perfecting poses. This approach removes the pressure to perform and allows individuals to explore their emotions and physical sensations without fear of judgment. Instructors are trained to use language and techniques that promote safety and comfort, ensuring that everyone feels respected and supported. This safe space enables participants to process their emotions and experiences at their own pace, facilitating deeper healing and self-discovery.

My Personal Connection to Trauma-Sensitive Yoga

As you may know, my path to trauma-sensitive yoga began during a tumultuous time in my life. My husband, Pat, was undergoing treatment for Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Pat had always been my source of support, my rock, my grounding force. Suddenly, our roles were reversed. I transitioned to being his full-time caretaker, putting my career as a zookeeper on hold. My days were spent preparing his meals, managing his side effects, scheduling his appointments, and my evenings were spent working on my master’s dissertation.

Amidst the chaos, yoga became my sanctuary. For an hour a day, I was able to confront everything that I was feeling. I could be vulnerable, sad, angry, depressed, exhausted, and every little thing in between all at once. I could break myself down into the smallest pieces and put myself back together again before I left my mat. That space gave me the ability to express what I simply couldn’t deal with in my daily life. A year after Pat’s recovery, I found myself teaching yoga full-time.

Experiencing cancer firsthand taught us invaluable lessons about the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment. Though we would never wish such a trial upon anyone, it ultimately strengthened our bond and reshaped our perspectives. Before Pat got sick, we had been living in a townhouse that was supposed to be our “three-year” home (we had been there for six years). Immediately after Pat finished treatment, we began building our forever home. We learned to stop waiting for life to happen to us and create the lives we truly desired, embracing both the highs and lows along the way.

The Power of Teal: Balancing Rejuvenation and Serenity

So why teal? Teal, with its blend of green’s vitality and blue’s tranquility, embodies the essence of what yoga means to me — a harmonious balance of strength and calm, vitality, and rejuvenation. Much like the vibrant hues of teal, yoga empowers us to find resilience in times of adversity and serenity amidst life’s storms.

My own journey through trauma illuminated the transformative power of yoga. As I grappled with Pat’s illness, yoga provided me with a space to confront my vulnerabilities and find strength within. It was through this practice that I discovered my calling as a yoga instructor.

 Join the Journey: Empowered Healing

I am committed to supporting others in their quest for physical and emotional well-being through trauma-sensitive yoga. That’s why I created the Empowered Healing Method, an 8 week program designed to help those who feel frozen by fear and anxiety confront the past, become more mindful and present, and ultimately begin to cultivate a future they want and deserve.

If you or someone you know could benefit from this practice, I invite you to join our community and embark on a journey of healing and empowerment. Let’s transform our trauma into strength, one breath at a time.

Thank you for joining me on this path towards healing and wholeness.

With Love and Compassion,

Mandy
